Club information and rules
About Us
We are an inclusive club and encourage participants of all abilities and fitness levels to come and have a go. Let us help you discover the joy of triathlon! You might just surprise yourself.
Simply sign up as a casual participant ($20 per race) to give it a try before you commit to joining as a member ($170 full price/$85 junior).
Make triathlon work for you:
- Event Distances: Even though the race distances are marked for each course on the day, you are allowed to alter the distances of each leg to suit your needs/fitness or ability, or skip a leg if you wish. You just need to inform the timekeeper about any changes made. You will still be timed, but will show in the system as DNF (did not finish) and will not be eligible for Championship or Double Up Series points.
- E-bikes, flippers, snorkels: These are allowed to be used during racing, however you will not be eligible for Championship or Double Up Series points.
Our official name is Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc. All competitors who register as a senior member or junior member are added to our club member register. Members who are 15 years and over will be added as an ordinary member. An individual who has not reached the age of 15 years is only eligible to be an associate member; associate members cannot vote at general meetings.
Only members are eligible to earn points in Championship or Double Up Series races, i.e. casual participants cannot earn points. Find more detail about our Championship and Double Up Series rules here: Championship and Double Up Series Rules
You will find our full Association rules here: Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc. Rules 2025 (Model Rules)
Event Participation
Junior policy: please note we have a minimum of age 12 to compete in the senior competition. All juniors aged 12-15 will need to be supervised on the bike course by a parent/guardian for their first three (3) events. As we race on open roads we need to ensure that they are confident with the road rules and have the bike handling skills required. (We also have a junior triathlon season, open to ages 6-16 year olds. Check the Junior Triathlon page on our website.)
Timing chips: Each member will receive a timing chip as part of their membership. This timing chip is then retained by each member and used from season to season. They are unique to the individual member and are not interchangeable. It is the responsibility of the member to remember to bring their timing chip on race day. You will not be able to get a timed result without it and replacements/loans won’t be available. Casual entries will receive a chip on race day which needs to be returned after the race. If a chip is lost by any participant it will be up to that person to pay for a replacement – current replacement cost is $55 per chip.
Drafting: The cycle leg for all events is non-drafting. On the cycle leg you must be at least 7 meters behind the person in front of you unless you are overtaking. If you have been overtaken you are not allowed to spend time in the slip stream and must let the overtaking person get 7 meters in front before attempting to re-overtake. Penalties will apply.
Tri Club Marshalling
For Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc. to continue to be a success everyone must help out – it is a hallmark of our club. As a Geraldton Tri Club member, you will be expected to take your turn at marshalling, to help run 1-2 events per year. Please take this responsibility seriously as the club cannot function without you!
Each week we need three people to arrive 90 minutes early to set up the courses, run the day, and pack up at the end. We roster members to do this, and you will be guided by a Race Coordinator from the Committee. It’s not difficult, but do come prepared: you may get wet putting out the swim buoys or providing water safety on the kayak; you will need a vehicle to set up the cycling safety signs around the cycle course.
Marshal’s Responsibilities:
- If unable to attend the event you have been rostered on for, it is yourresponsibility to find a replacement before the nominated date and inform the Marshalling Coordinator – see the calendar for contact details.
- Marshals need to be at St Georges Beach by 6.30am on Sunday mornings ready to begin setting out equipment for races beginning at 8am. (It will be earlier for the Olympic Distance event.)
- Due to the requirement of setting out road signs for the cycle course and providing water safety, it is recommended that all marshals drive a vehicle to the event and come prepared to get wet.
- It is the marshals responsibility to have the swim, ride and run courses set up and ready for competition 20 minutes before the nominated start time of the event.
- Marshals are to confirm with the Race Coordinator the race directions and any special conditions for the day.
Marshals are the most important people in our club – without them, we would not be able to run our events! If you are unable to fulfil your rostered marshalling duty, it is important that you find someone to replace you and let the Marshalling Coordinator know.
Registration Waiver
The following waiver must be accepted when registering through RaceRoster to participate in one of our events.
I agree to abide by all rules of the Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc. (also known as Geraldton Triathlon Club) which relate, in part, to safe and fair sport practices.
I confirm and agree that:
- I am participating at my own will and understand that participating in a triathlon event involves risks including injury, illness, dehydration, adverse weather, accidents, or worse.
- I am physically fit to participate. I have consulted a doctor if needed and take full responsibility for my health.
- I accept all risks, including serious injury or death, and understand the routes may include hazards, such as submerged reef/rocks, uneven terrain, and traffic.
- I waive and release Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc., its committee, members, partners, sponsors, volunteers, from any claims or liabilities arising from my participation.
- I am responsible for my belongings and acknowledge organisers are not liable for loss, theft, or damage.
- I will follow all event rules and instructions. Non-compliance may lead to disqualification.
I understand my membership fee is non-refundable.
I understand that children or pets must not be left unsupervised in or near the transition area while I am competing. Marshals are unable to provide supervision and as such Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc. accepts no responsibility for them.
I understand that pictures of me may appear in the Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc.’s social media and other media and that by agreeing to these rules I give my permission for my name and images of me to be shared.
I understand that I may be called upon to assist with marshalling a club event during the season, indicated by my name being published in the marshalling section of the club calendar. Marshalling duties may include but are not limited to setting up the transition area, swim, bike and run courses; providing water safety; directing race participants; maintaining water stations; taking photos; and completing all post-race pack down duties. I will come prepared and suitably attired to fully support these duties.
If I am unable to complete my published roster duty, I understand it is my responsibility to source a replacement marshal in advance and notify the Marshalling Coordinator.
I understand that my assistance during race set up and pack down is always appreciated.
I understand that Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc. is a sun safe club and therefore members are asked to wear sunscreen, a hat/cap for running and to cover up as far as is practicable whilst running and cycling.
I understand that I must bring and wear my own safety helmet for the cycle leg. I understand that triathlon is a non-drafting sport; cyclists must ride more than 7m behind the bike in front and must pass slower cyclists promptly.
Important: Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc does NOT operate on a closed course –i.e. the roads are shared with cars and other traffic.
All members and competitors must obey the normal road rules as they would if driving a motor vehicle. This includes most significantly stopping at stop signs, giving way to your right at signposted intersections and roundabouts and giving way at un-signposted intersections where required.
All members and competitors may not ride more than two abreast on the road as per the Road Traffic Act 1974.
All members and competitors must show drivers of motor vehicles the same road courtesy as they would expect from drivers of motor vehicles.
All members and competitors are aware they are abiding by the rules and regulations of the road traffic act.
The Geraldton Triathlon Association Inc. has no liability to members and competitors who fail to obey the Road Traffic Act and are essentially breaking the law by doing so.
By ticking this box, you agree with this waiver.
